Supporting an Ethical and Independant Rehabilitation Center

P-WAC is a primate rehabilitation and care center based in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has been working closely with local communities for over ten years. Our work is based on high standards of animal welfare, ecosystem protection, and collaboration with local communities.

This page is for foundations, businesses, and institutional partners wishing to support a recognized, transparent, and independent field project.

Who are we ?

P-WAC works to care for chimpanzees and other primates orphaned by poaching, in collaboration with local authorities and conservation services. Our mission covers the entire rehabilitation process: rescue, veterinary care, behavioral rehabilitation, socialization, and monitoring in a secure forest environment.
The center currently cares for over seventy primates and is facing a steady increase in arrivals in a region of the country where alternative wildlife care options are nonexistent.

What sets us apart

Our work is based on clear choices:

  • A strict ethical framework, centered on the interests, well-being, and respect of the animals

  • Closure to the public and a rejection of ecotourism and any staging that encourages trafficking

  • No public interaction with the animals

  • Independence from zoos, laboratories, and extractive industries (oil, mining, forestry, etc.)

  • Strong local roots, with teams drawn from neighboring communities and trained over the long term

These choices entail significant constraints, but they are central to the credibility and consistency of our work.

Well known work, structurally limited resources

Despite significant media and institutional recognition, the center’s financial needs remain high and constant. The quality of the work, the rigor of the health protocols, and the scientific rigor do not necessarily reflect the human and financial realities on the ground.

High standards come at a cost, often invisible.
P-WAC is currently doing a great deal with very little, in a context where each new patient commits the center for decades to come.

Our funding needs

Partnerships can take two complementary forms.

👉 General Support

General support directly contributes to the center’s operations:
  • Veterinary care
  • Primate feeding
  • Local staff salaries
  • Maintenance and security of protected forests
  • Daily operation of infrastructure
It ensures the continuity and stability of activities.

👉 Targeted Support

Some partners wish to support a specific position or action, for example:
  • Funding for a zookeeper position
  • Training of local staff
  • Care and monitoring of a group of primates
  • Infrastructure (fencing, buildings, equipment)
This targeted support is part of a coherent overall vision.

Governance and Economic Model

The center operates with a local team that receives compensation, training, and long-term support. Project coordination is currently handled by the founder, who has chosen not to draw a salary until financial resources allow for the long-term security of all key positions.
The goal is to achieve a sustainable model that will, in the medium term, allow for the complete structuring of the team, including project coordination, to guarantee the stability and continuity of operations.
Each funding contribution directly supports the security of activities and the progressive professionalization of the center.

Ethics and Red lines

P-WAC’s independence is essential to its operations. As such, the center refuses all funding from:
  • Zoos and commercial captivity facilities

  • Experimental laboratories

  • Extractive industries (mining, forestry, oil)

  • Any activity that harms ecosystems or animal welfare

This ethical framework guarantees the project’s consistency and credibility.
