Sponsor a Primate

Poaching impacts many, if not all, wild animals that are sold for their meat, with bushmeat being part of the local culture. P-WAC welcomes chimpanzees and also monkeys,s specifically red-tailed monkeys. Most of our young orphans were held captive among expatriates who agreed to entrust them to us for reintroduction to the wild.

Why sponsor?

Our sponsorship program allows you to assist with the daily expenses of our orphans. Your contribution will help us to buy the food they need (milk, fruits, vegetables), help finance their care facility and pay the salary of their dedicated carer. In short: Simple! Their daily life will be improved thanks to your generosity.

How do you become a sponsor?

Choose your adoptee, then your type of sponsorship (classic, medium, prestige, luxury) and finally how you want to pay. Thanks to your support, your little adoptee will make the most of his rehabilitation because you help us to bring him the best. Our team will send you information about your adoptee by email. Watch for it!

Bonus: A sponsorship is considered a gift and  provides a tax deduction for EU taxpayers!

The chimpanzees :

Mongo is a 5 year old female chimpanzee, released from the Kinshasa Zoo. She is timid and often needs reassurance. She is in rehabilitation with Mongo and Mayélé.

Youyou is a 5 year old female chimpanzee, released from the Kinshasa Zoo. She loves life, has her own way of doing things, and is quite a character.

Mayélé arrived at P-WAC in 2018. Seized at a local wizard, he has trouble identifying with his peers because of his trauma. We do not know what he experienced during his captivity, but he has scars on his body. Today he is in rehabilitation with Mongo and Youyou.

Elonga is the little one of the group. At about 5 months, he was destined for international wildlife trafficking. Saved at the last minute, he almost died during his quarantine due to many infections. Today he is well and is learning life in the forest.  Soon he will join the other chimps to learn the rules of chimp society !

Naseka arrived at P-WAC in December 2020 at the age of about a year and a half. After being seized by the Congolese state and placed in the Kinshasa Zoo, he was transferred to the rehabilitation center to start a new life. Infected by many intestinal parasites, he was treated by our team. Naseka means “I laugh” in Lingala because, since his first outing in the forest, he smiles and has become a real funny guy. He is learning about the joys of the forest and will soon be introduced to the Elonga group.

Lipipi is the youngest of the project. Arrived at about 4 months old in December 2020, she had been at the Kinshasa Zoo after being brought there by an individual. She was in poor health when she arrived at the zoo, skeletal and very ill (lung disease). She has bullet marks on her stomach from the massacre of her group. Since being in the rehabilitation center, she has come to life. Today, she begins her outings in the forest to take her first steps in her element and in a few months, she can be introduced to other chimpanzees. For now, she is being pampered by her little surrogate mother who watches over her day and night.

Among the red-tail :

Rambo is about 6 years old and was captive in Matadi with Wumba. He is now in a rehabilitation enclosure. He is a wise monkey and a model for the little ones.

Wumba is about 6 years old, and was captive in Matadi with Rambo. He has many issues related to his captivity and his rehabilitation will be long.

As a two-year-old male, Inga is quite fearful and unpredictable. Well suited to the group, he is the most capricious of all. He is still friends with Sikila, the little one he was protecting when he arrived at P-WAC.

Sikila arrived with Inga. Very weak on arrival, he is now stronger, although he remains very small for his age (two years). He is the wildest of the group and rarely approaches humans. Along with Joe, his surrogate mother, he has found his place and is learning from his elders.

Aged over two years, Joe is the female of the group. Very independent, she has the soul of explorer and is a good nurse! She was a real little mom for Sikila and Madesu.

First orphan to arrive at P-WAC, Kiki died in 2020. Thanks to everyone who has supported him.

The second orphan brought into the project, Muke takes his name from his thinness (Muké = skinny in Lingala). He is very touching, but also very lonely. He protects the group and his territory, like a grownup.

Bitumba was detained in Matadi by the former owner of Joe, who had promised not to buy any more monkeys…in vain. Bitumba was chained next to a dog and was totally scared. After his quarantine, he joined the group, and after being hazed by Kiki, he became his personal bodyguard. Bitumba left us in 2021 following an illness. He is no longer to be sponsored. Thank you to all his godparents for being there for him.

Madesu arrived at P-WAC in 2019 after being seized in Kinshasa. He arrived very small, at about 5 months old, and went out of control when he saw the madesu (traditional dish of beans) cooked for the team. He demanded it and did not calm down until he got some, hence his name! As soon as he was introduced to the group, Joe came to hug him, and he moved on with his little mom. She introduced him to the others and integrated him with his peers. Madesu has grown up well, he has become the alarm caller in the group when birds or snakes threaten.
